Palliative Care

Millions in sub-Saharan Africa - children and adults - are living with and dying from HIV/AIDS, cancers and other life-limiting illnesses without care and pain relief.

We are working to ensure that palliative care - an affordable and holistic approach to healthcare that provides relief from pain and symptoms and emphasises quality of life for patients and their families - is available to all those with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-limiting illnesses who need it.

Through scaling up services, developing education and training, advocacy and research and evaluation, we want to ensure that palliative care becomes:

  • fully integrated into national health policies and systems
  • fully integrated into the strategic plans of HIV/AIDS and cancer stakeholders working in sub-Saharan Africa
  • a funding priority for donors.

We work proactively to identify and support our selected partners in seven countries of focus (Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe) and we also collaborate with others in the UK and the United States.

Now is an exciting time to be working in palliative care. Neglected for many years in sub-Saharan Africa, it is increasingly gaining recognition for the crucial role it plays in care and treatment, and we are committed to keeping up the momentum for change.

New report reveals lack of evidence on palliative care for children in sub-Saharan Africa

Despite the massive need for children's palliative care, the research evidence needed to support the expansion of services is still significantly underdeveloped.
